Philips Hue

Overview

Connect Philips Hue so AI clients can discover and control your lights, rooms, zones, scenes, and sensors through the Hue Remote API. Use this integration when you need a Hue MCP server, Philips Hue OAuth for ChatGPT or Claude, or a governed way to control your smart home from AI agents without building a custom connector.

Common use cases

  • Hue MCP for Cursor or Claude Desktop — point your client at POST /mcp/hue with a stackgate.ai bearer token.
  • Control lights away from home — Hue Remote API reaches your bridge through Signify’s cloud after you authorize.
  • Private gateway — access Hue alongside other tools through one MCP connection with hue__* namespaced tools.

Prerequisites

  • A Philips Hue Bridge registered to your Hue account (remote access enabled in the Hue app)
  • A stackgate.ai account

Getting credentials

OAuth (recommended)

  1. Sign in to stackgate.ai.
  2. Go to Integrations and open Philips Hue.
  3. Click Activate, then Connect Philips Hue.
  4. Sign in at account.meethue.com and approve access for the stackgate.ai Hue app.
  5. stackgate.ai stores your tokens and creates a Hue application key automatically.

If authorization expires later, disconnect and reconnect Philips Hue from My Integrations.

Using with AI clients

  • Dedicated endpoint: POST /mcp/hue with a Sanctum bearer token
  • Private gateway: one config for all integrations — use hue__* namespaced tools

Troubleshooting

  • 422 integration not configured — complete OAuth connect in My Integrations.
  • 422 application key missing — reconnect Philips Hue so a remote application key can be created.
  • Auth / 401 errors — reconnect; access tokens expire and refresh tokens can expire after long inactivity.
  • 429 rate limit — Hue limits command rates, and the hub may apply a fair-use daily quota to protect the shared remote API allotment. Wait and retry.
  • Lights or rooms missing — confirm the bridge is online and remote access is enabled in the Hue app.

    List all Philips Hue lights with IDs, names/metadata via owner devices, and current on/dimming/color state.

  • get_light

    Get details and current state for a single Philips Hue light by CLIP resource ID.

  • update_light

    Turn a light on/off or change brightness (0–100), color temperature (mirek), xy color, or transition duration.

  • list_rooms

    List rooms with metadata names, children devices, and grouped_light service references for room-level control.

  • get_room

    Get a single room by CLIP resource ID.

  • list_zones

    List zones (logical light groups spanning rooms) with grouped_light service IDs.

    Get a single zone by CLIP resource ID.

  • list_grouped_lights

    List grouped_light resources used to control entire rooms or zones at once.

    Get a single grouped_light resource by ID (on/dimming/color aggregate state).

    Control a room or zone via its grouped_light ID: on/off, brightness, mirek, xy color, transition.

  • list_scenes

    List scenes with IDs, metadata names, and group (room/zone) associations.

  • get_scene

    Get a single scene by CLIP resource ID.

  • recall_scene

    Activate a scene (active, dynamic_palette, or static). Optional duration and brightness override.

  • list_smart_scenes

    List smart (24h circadian) scenes.

  • get_smart_scene

    Get a single smart scene by CLIP resource ID.

  • recall_smart_scene

    Activate or deactivate a smart (24h) scene.

  • list_devices

    List devices (lights, bridges, switches, sensors) with product metadata and services.
