Overview
Read and update Google Sheets spreadsheets from an AI client. List spreadsheets, read tabs and cell values, then create a spreadsheet or edit, append, and clear values.
Prerequisites
- A Google account that can open Google Sheets
- A stackgate.ai account
Getting credentials
- Open Integrations, then Google Sheets.
- Click Activate, then Sign in with Google.
- Choose standard access to edit spreadsheets, or pick individual tools first.
- Approve the Google consent screen and return to My Integrations.
You do not create a Google Cloud project. stackgate.ai uses its Google OAuth app. Standard connect requests permission to edit your spreadsheets.
Using with AI clients
- Dedicated endpoint:
POST /mcp/google-sheets - Private gateway:
google-sheets__*tools
Pass a spreadsheet id from list_spreadsheets, or the id in https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/{id}/edit. Ask for a bounded A1 range such as Sheet1!A1:Z200.
Troubleshooting
- Auth errors - reconnect Google Sheets in My Integrations.
- Write failures - standard connect includes edit access. A read-only tool selection cannot change cells. Reconnect and include write tools.
- Spreadsheet not found - confirm the file is shared with the connected Google account.
- Too many requests - Google allows a limited number of reads and writes per minute. Wait and retry.
- Name search misses a file - names with an apostrophe are unreliable. Pass the spreadsheet id instead.
Available tools
-
list_spreadsheets
List Google Sheets spreadsheets the connected account can open. Returns spreadsheet ids for get_values and update_values.
-
get_spreadsheet
Get a spreadsheet title, URL, and sheet tab names. Does not return cell values; use get_values for a range.
-
get_values
Read cell values for a bounded A1 range. Use FORMULA before rewriting formulas.
-
create_spreadsheet
Create a new Google Sheets spreadsheet. Returns the new spreadsheet id.
-
update_values
Overwrite cell values in an A1 range. USER_ENTERED stores a leading = as a formula.
-
append_values
Append rows after the last row of data in an A1 range.
-
clear_values
Clear cell values in an A1 range. The sheet tab and formatting stay in place.
-
add_sheet
Add a sheet tab to an existing spreadsheet.
